Bharat Ratna Award is the highest civilian award in India.
~ Bharat Ratna was instituted on 2 January 1954 by the then President of India, Rajendra Prasad.
~ Bharat Ratna Award is given by the President of India. But who to give this award is recommended by the Prime Minister of India.
The Bharat Ratna award consists of a medal and a citation by the President of India.
Prior to 2011, the Bharat Ratna was awarded for distinguished service in the field of art, culture and science, and public service work of the highest order. But after the amendment made in 2011, no specific area has been prescribed for conferring the Bharat Ratna award. Now Bharat Ratna recipients can be the ones doing special service in any field.
~ It is not necessary that the Bharat Ratna award should be given every year.
~ Bharat Ratna award can be given to a maximum of three persons in a year.
~ Bharat Ratna Award is made in Alipore, West Bengal.
~ The design of the Bharat Ratna Award has also been changed over time. The design of the first Bharat Ratna award was in the form of a 35 mm circular gold medal. In which the Sun was made on the front side and Bharat Ratna was written in Devanagari script above. There was a garland of flowers on the lower side and the national emblem and motto were written on the reverse side. This design of the medal was later changed.
~ Now the Bharat Ratna award is made of bronze in the shape of a peepal leaf. In its next part, the shape of the sun is inscribed. Under which Bharat Ratna is inscribed in the Devanagari script. The national emblem (imitation of Ashoka’s lion pillar) and Satyamev Jayate are inscribed on its reverse side. The national emblem, the sun and the sides of the medal are all made of platinum. The medal is 5.8 cm long, 4.7 cm wide and 3.1 mm in thickness. It is worn around the neck with a white thread.
~Bharat Ratna Award is not a title but just an honor. No person can use it as a title with his name.
~ Bharat Ratna is a merit-based award. This honor can be given to any citizen of India, irrespective of religion, caste, occupation, position, and gender.
~ There is no written provision that the Bharat Ratna award will be given only to Indian citizens. Therefore Bharat Ratna award has been given to foreigners also. There are two non-Indians to have received the Bharat Ratna award. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (1987) and Nelson Mandela (1990)
~ When the Bharat Ratna Award was instituted in 1954, it was first awarded to Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and C.V. Raman was given
The Bharat Ratna award has also been controversial. From 1977 to 1980 and from 1992 to 1995, the Bharat Ratna award was put on hold. The award was stopped on 13 July 1977 by the Janata Party government’s Prime Minister Morarji Desai but was reintroduced by the 1980 Congress government. In the year 1992, some questions were raised regarding the validity of the Bharat Ratna award. And a petition was filed in the court. For this reason, the Bharat Ratna award was not given to anyone from 1992 to 1995. Only after the decision of the Supreme Court, the award of Bharat Ratna was started again.
When it came to confer the Bharat Ratna Award to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of India, he had categorically refused to say that those who had been in its selection committee should not be given this honor. Later in 1992, he was given this honor posthumously.
Initially, there was no provision to give the Bharat Ratna award posthumously, but in 1955 a provision was added to award the award posthumously. After that, this honor has been given to people posthumously.
~ Lal Bahadur Shastri was the first person to receive the Bharat Ratna award posthumously.
In 1992, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, but the Government of India withdrew this honor due to his death being disputed. This is the only instance of the honor being withdrawn.
~ No amount of any kind is provided to the Bharat Ratna awardees.
~ Other major facilities are made available to the persons who receive this honor. Among which the following facilities are prominent.
If the respected person visits a state, the state government welcomes him as a guest of the state. Along with this, the state government gives them transportation and accommodation facilities in the state, etc. Security is also provided as per rules.
The state government also provides facilities to their family members (spouse and children) as per rules. Along with this personal staff and drivers are also provided.
Indian embassies provide them with proper security while traveling abroad. A Bharat Ratna awardee is also entitled to a diplomatic passport.
